Could Microsoft Bully Big Blue? Microsoft wanted IBM's own software banned fromits PCs, exec says.by Patrick Thibodeau, IDG News Service June 8, 1999, 5:40 p.m. PT Microsoft urged IBM to remove its own software from IBM PCs, an IBM executive testified Microsoft antitrust trial. But Microsoft countered that indealings with Big Blue, the software developer is notthe giant.Microsoft offered IBM a cheaper Windows license if the hardware manufacturer agreed to not bundle SmartSuite, marketed by IBM's Lotus Development subsidiary, as well as to drop Netscape Navigator, said Garry Norris, now program director of IBM's Network and Hardware Division. Norris had handled licensing negotiations with Microsoft for several years and testified Tuesday as a witness for the U.S. Departmentof Justice in its antitrust case against Microsoft.In a meeting on March 6, 1997, Microsoft outlined a plan to give IBM favorable Windows licensing conditions if it made its PC systems "neutral" by dropping all software that competed with Microsoftproducts But Microsoft's attorneys offered a picture of IBM asthe dominant force in the industry.
